This is the last year on Derek Jeter’s ten-year 189 million dollar contract.  He has been a major part of the Yankees for the past nine years and like always will be the captain and leader on the New York Yankees who will try to repeat their World Championship title.  Jeter does not want to play anywhere else and I personally do not see him leaving New York.  Can you see Jeter playing for another ball club.  No, the first few things you think of when Yankees is said is, world championships, Babe Ruth, Graig Nettles, Mariano Rivera, and of course Derek Jeter.  Sorry to all the ball clubs out there but Jeter is staying in New York.

Under Coach Tony Rossi, the Siena Saints were able to take one game from Stetson during their season opener series.  Throughout the whole series Siena held there own and were able to have chances to win more than one game.  With freshman Robert Tedesco from Mohonasen on the hill in the first game shows how good Siena can be throughout the whole year. Mike Fish, who is also a freshman from Bethlehem, Had five hits in the four game series, three coming in the second game.  Siena will be a great contender to be the top dog in the MAAC conference with their impact freshman and experienced veterans.

Last Year As A Dodger

Manny Rameriez, LA Dogders

Manny Ramirez arrived at spring training earlier this week and announced that this would be his final spring training with the Los Angeles Dodgers.  According to espn.go.com this is what Manny stated, “I won’t be here next year, so I just want to enjoy myself,” Ramirez said. “I don’t know [if he'll play next year]. I just know I’m not going to be here. When the season is over, I will see where I’m at.” The show boating, right-handed power hitting, left fielder has had his ups and downs since being traded to ironically Joe Torre’s, former Yankee skipper, with injury and steroids. Where do you see Manny next year, playing golf or shagging fly balls in left field for another organization?

Virginia Now On Top

Tyler Cannon, Captain SS

With the first weekend of division one college baseball in the books, Texas got knocked off the podium.  According to baseballamerica.com, Virginia won two out of three on the road at East Carolina University, who was ranked No. 11 in the country.  Texas lost the top spot by being upset at home by New Mexico.  In the game of baseball, anything can happen, who will be the top dog next week.  No one knows.

UNiversity of Virginia

The former Yankee, Johnny Damon passed up a two-year 14 million dollar contract to rejoin the World Champions of Baseball.  The Tigers gave Damon a 8 million dollar one year contract.  People are sceptical whether Damon will help the Tigers but after the Tigers traded Curtis Granderson, I think the Tigers are looking for anyone.  According to espn.go.com/sports/, for Damon, “This is the place that I want to be.”

Stephen Strasburg, the first overall pick in last years draft went to the Washington Nationals and has started his spring training in Viera, Florida.  Being the new guy on the team, Strasburg has gotten some tough love from the veterans on the team.   They are not just going to throw him in the big leagues but let him work his way up.  Strasburg himself is not in a rush to make it to the big time, he is going to go where the nationals send him.  According to sports.espn.go.com the Nationals are going to treat him like gold and be very cautious.  The last thing they need is for Strasburg  to create a growing injury from being thrown in the fire.

As college baseball begins, the pre-season toll has the University of Texas to be the final team standing at Omaha.  Even though the season kicked off on the 19th for all division one baseball teams, there is plenty of time for other teams to make an impact and knock Texas out of the number one spot.  In the baseball world, pitching and defense win championships.  According to thecollegebaseballblog.com, Texas is loaded with pitching this year after finishing second in the College World Series last year.  Along with defense, with a .976 fielding percentage last year, Texas is going to be hard to beat.  But watch out Louisiana St. and UNiversity of Virginia who follow as ranked number two and three, because at Omaha, its anyones championship.
